The church was decorated in a jungle theme and a video was played of the kids singing some of the songs from the week. Cynthia spoke on following the example of the disciples in our everyday lives and how our church is more than an aquarium filled with beautiful fish; we are a school of fish going out and spreading the word of God.

May 23 “If Only You Had Been Here.” by Professor Gerald Sittser
Jerry taught us about encouragement and forgiveness as his sermon focused on the difference between resuscitation (the raising of Lazarus) and the resurrection, that is, how Jesus Christ conquered death.
One piece that stays with me is a comment on Hebrews 10:24: “Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works.” He explained it this way. “The word consider is like an artist regards a subject, a doctor studies an X-ray, lovers look into each other’s eyes. Study the person (your child, your spouse, a fellow church member) and ask, ‘What do I need to do to call this person to the highest goal? How can I inspire them to be the best they can be?’”
Jerry gave the example of how he and one of his colleagues read each other’s writing and critiqued it so brutally that “there was blood all over the page.” Of course, he said, it was done in love and he appreciated it. He encouraged us to stir up one another to love and good works. This makes the church a much different thing than a social club. It is the body of Christ. So he asked us, “Is the church just a social club, or does it really get you going?”

May 16 "The Art of Encouragement" by Cynthia O'Brien (24:09) Scriptures: Matthew 15:29-39 & 2 Corinthians 1:3-7
Encouragement. The things that you say and do to encourage other people make a tremendous difference. Sending a note or bringing food to someone who’s having a tough time. Letting someone know you are praying for them. Small things have a large impact for good. I would love to hear from you about how you encourage others or how someone has encouraged you.
I told a story about “Best Game Ever,” an elaborate prank staged by Improv Everywhere at a Hermosa Beach Little League game to encourage the kids. Here’s the link to the story: http://improveverywhere.com/2008/04/07/best-game-ever/
